Water, sanitation and hygiene for Tea Pickers and Ethnic minorities in Rural Bangladesh.


  • To determine appropriate, effective and sustainable approaches and WaSH technologies to support the tea pickers and ethnic communities and scaling up the lessons.
  • To increase sustainable access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene for tea pickers and ethnic communities fulfilling their rights and needs.
  • To capitalize critical knowledge of tea pickers and ethnic communities related to WaSH and recognize their WaSH rights by the policy makers, local governments and service agencies through advocacy campaign in local, regional as well as national level.

Factors of vulnerabilities and excluded people in selected areas explored. User-friendly & sustainable water supply and sanitation technologies in selected areas identified and adopted. Poor & vulnerable communities and local governments are strengthened and engaged in participatory planning and implementing safe water supply, sanitation and hygiene facilities. Access to safe water supply, improved sanitation facilities and safe hygiene practices increased in tea garden and 4 ethnic groups’ areas. Capacity of vulnerable tea and other four communities developed for sustainable management of water supply & sanitation facilities. Interaction and knowledge sharing among policy-makers, program planners, media, LGIs, civil society actors and communities increased on water, sanitation and hygiene promotion. Relevant stakeholders engaged in facilitating effective delivery of water supply and sanitation services.

Main Activities
Form a WaSH committee in each of the tea garden/ community, Train the committee members on WaSH, Set up sanitation centers through local entrepreneurs, conduct assessment to determine sanitary services in all educational institutions in each of the 2 Unions, Repair, upgrade, or construct separate sanitary latrines with adequate water supply for boys and girls in all schools.

Tea gardens and Monipuri, Garo, Santal and Kashi communities in Alinagar and Madhabpur union of Kamalgonj Upozila in Moulvibazar district.
